El Popol Vuh es una recopilación de narraciones míticas, legendarias e históricas del pueblo k’iche’, el pueblo maya guatemalteco con mayor cantidad de población. El libro, de gran valor histórico y espiritual, ha sido llamado el Libro Sagrado de los Mayas.

Se conserva en un manuscrito bilingüe redactado por fray Francisco Ximénez, quien se identifica como el transcriptor (de la versión en maya quiché) y traductor de un «libro» antiguo. Con base en esto se ha postulado la existencia de una obra escrita alrededor del año 1550 por un indígena que, luego de aprender a escribir con caracteres latinos, capturó y escribió la recitación oral de un anciano.

Sin embargo, este hipotético autor «nunca revela la fuente de su obra escrita y en su lugar invita al lector a creer lo que quiera del primer folio recto»,1​ donde afirma que el libro original "ya no se ve más" y utiliza la expresión "pintado" para describirlo. Si existiera tal documento, habría permanecido oculto hasta el período 1701-1703, cuando Ximénez llegó a ser cura doctrinero de Santo Tomás Chichicastenango (Chuilá).

El Popol Vuh relata la inexistencia del mundo hasta que el creador y formador decidió generar la vida. La intención era que sus propias creaciones le pudieran hablar y agradecer por la vida. Primero se creó la Tierra, después los animales y finalmente, los hombres. Estos fueron inicialmente hechos de barro, pero como el intento fracasó, el gran creador y formador decidió extraerlos de la madera. Una vez constituidas otras tantas familias, el creador y formador, temeroso de que a sus criaturas pudiera tentarlas la idea de suplantarlos en sabiduría, disminuyó la vista e inteligencia de los ocho.

The Popol Vuh is a collection of mythical, legendary and historical narratives of the K’iche ’people, the Guatemalan Mayan people with the largest population. The book, of great historical and spiritual value, has been called the Sacred Book of the Maya.

It is preserved in a bilingual manuscript written by Fray Francisco Ximénez, who identifies himself as the transcriber (of the Mayan Quiché version) and translator of an old "book." Based on this, the existence of a work written around the year 1550 has been postulated by an indigenous man who, after learning to write with Latin characters, captured and wrote the oral recitation of an elder.

However, this hypothetical author «never reveals the source of his written work and instead invites the reader to believe what he wants from the first straight folio», 1 where he states that the original book "is no longer seen" and uses the expression "painted" to describe it. If such a document existed, it would have remained hidden until the period 1701-1703, when Ximenez became a doctrinal priest of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango (Chuilá).

The Popol Vuh recounts the non-existence of the world until the creator and trainer decided to generate life. The intention was that his own creations could speak and thank him for life. First Earth was created, then animals and finally men. These were initially made of mud, but as the attempt failed, the great creator and trainer decided to extract them from the wood. Once constituted as many families, the creator and trainer, fearful that their creatures might be tempted to supplant them in wisdom, diminished the sight and intelligence of the eight.
